During tattoo removal, the laser energy is absorbed by the tattoo, causing a photo-acoustic effect that breaks down the ink into smaller particles. As the area heals, the body’s immune system naturally eliminates the fragmented ink through a process known as phagocytosis, gradually fading the tattoo with minimal risk of scarring or hyperpigmentation.

Laser tattoo removal is effective, but achieving optimal results typically requires multiple sessions. The number of sessions depends on factors such as your skin type, the colors used in the tattoo, and the quality of the ink.

Each session generally lasts between 5 and 20 minutes, depending on the size of the tattoo. The total number of sessions varies—professional or newer tattoos may require 8-12 sessions to fully break down, while older or amateur tattoos may need fewer. Treatments are spaced 6-8 weeks apart to give your body time to flush out the damaged pigment, so the entire process can span several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We will take a detailed look at your concerns and the individual condition of your skin, to determine whether this treatment will benefit you. Harmony XL Pro™ can be used on all skin types and tattoos; however, prior to treatment a consultation will be carried out where you will be asked to give informed consent, and a test patch will be carried out at least 24 hours before your first treatment.

  • During treatment, you will feel a hot zapping sensation which will only last while the area is being treated. This can be likened to the sensation of a hot elastic band being snapped against the skin. There may be some heat in the area following treatment, but this will dissipate quickly. Each treatment becomes less painful as we break down the pigment throughout the duration of your course of sessions.

  • Following tattoo removal with Harmony XL Pro you may get some blistering, scabbing, swelling and heat sensation in the treated area. Although this may look worrying it is a normal occurrence with tattoo removal and will disappear. Dry or paraffin gauze dressing may be used to cover the area if needed but this is mainly to keep the area safe from clothes rubbing against the area. You should let the area heal and avoid touching it.
